The first major task of the project was to assemble the main frames and the frame extensions. In British Railways time, locomotive frames were assembled using cold rivets. This skill is very hard to find these days so the project decided to used fitted bolts. These bolts are a tight fit in the bolt hole and, we believe, offer a better securing solution to rivets.

After manufacturing all of the required components, the job started with CTL Seal setting up a base frame which the components could be assembled on.

Here Geoff and Keith inspect the first step.

Keith and Alan inspect the dowels that will be used to locate the frames onto the stretchers.

With machining of the combined frame stretchers complete, we could line up the smokebox saddle and the frame stretchers on the bed frame.

We used the frame keeps (placed upside down for now) to ensure that the stretchers were the correct distance apart. Peter from CTL Seal is machining a small countersink on the frame keep pads.

With one of the frame plates flat on its side, the vertical stretchers were fastened to the frame plate using temporary bolts. The other frame plate was then lifted up and placed on top of other vertical stretchers.

The frame assembly was then lowered onto the combined frame stretchers.

At this stage everything is just loose bolted. The check now is to ensure that the frame plates are bedded down to the combined frame stretchers.

The assembly now starts to show its scale. Tom Wade from CTL Seal and Geoff discuss the project. The frames, together with the frame extensions still to be fitted will be just over 42 foot long or 12.8 metres.

Pete installs the front firebox support and pony truck pivot stretcher. The frame extensions will be fitted later in this area.

The right hand motion bracket is installed. This will only be finally fastened in place once the cylinders have been fitted.
